QTBIPOC Bird Walk @ Duke Gardens 5/4/24
Explore the birds that call Duke Gardens home with Naturally Wild LLC. Join bird guide Deja Perkins to explore how the garden changes from spring to summer and how the feathered residents change monthly. Participants will learn how to identify various birds, help contribute to the NC Bird Atlas, and learn how to monitor birds in their own neighborhoods using Merlin and eBird. This program is offered every first Saturday from March through June, on March 2, April 6, May 4 and June 1.
This program is designed to center queer, trans, Black, Indigenous and people of color (QTBIPOC) audiences, voices and experiences as a way to increase access to birding and outdoor spaces for historically marginalized identities. Registration is prioritized for individuals who identify as queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, or a person of color. All skill levels are welcome. Thirteen sanitized binoculars will be available for use; participants are also welcome to bring their own.
Fee: free; registration required.
Location: Meet at the Gothic Gate entrance.
Accessibility: This will be a small group program that takes place outdoors and traveling on a combination of paved and unpaved paths with some uneven surfaces and moderate inclines.

Explore Outdoors with Participatory Science
Have you ever wondered what birds and plants exist in your neighborhood? Join us on April 14th to celebrate Citizen Science Month at Walnut Creek Wetland Center! Learn how to use app-based participatory tools to explore and monitor your neighborhood's nature. This event will provide training to help you become confident in bird identification and monitoring, plant/tree identification, and field safety. This event will be held in the Walnut Creek Room at Walnut Creek Wetland Center. Expect a combination of indoor and outdoor activities. Light breakfast snacks will be provided. Check-in and breakfast are from 8:30- 8:45. Please wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. The site contains a combination of dirt and paved trailways. Trail conditions may be muddy after a rainy day.
This event is led by Black women for individuals who identify as a part of the Black, Brown, or Indigenous diasporic communities. Presentations are suited for individuals 12+.

Walnut Creek Community Bird Walk
Join me in exploring a new entrance to the Walnut Creek Wetland Park at Bailey Drive. This two-hour walk will start and end at the Baily Drive Gateway at 605 Bailey Dr. Raleigh, NC 27610. This walk is beginner-friendly. Some binoculars are available on a first-come basis. Participants will practice using binoculars to sight wintering bird species in Raleigh. This is a wooded wetland walk. Dress appropriately for the weather with comfortable shoes that can get muddy. Register online at go.ncsu.edu/parks2024. BGSA Greenway Community Clean Up
The NC State Black Graduate Student Association will be hosting a greenway clean up on April 15th 2023. The clean up will start at John Chavis Park in Raleigh North Carolina and participants will clean the greenway (including the stream) up until Walnut Creek Wetland Center. Once at the wetland center, participants will have time to explore and engage in a free guided bird walk with Deja Perkins sponsored by Naturally Wild LLC. Participants will go birding at walnut creek wetland center, and along the greenway back towards John Chavis Park. Optional BYO Lunch at Transfer Co Food Hall post walk. Registration will open April 1.

Great Backyard Bird Count at NCMA
Join birder Deja Perkins on 2/18/23 for a bird watching outing at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Explore the NCMA while participating in The Great Backyard Bird Count, a citizen science project by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Participants will learn how to use eBird to submit data and keep track of the birds in your neighborhood. This event is free and open to the public. Bird walks will begin at 10am and 11am. Arrive 15 minutes early to allow for navigation to the meeting spot.

Join birder Deja Perkins on 2/11/23 for a bird watching outing at Chavis Park. Practice your identification of Raleigh’s winter birds in one of Raleigh’s oldest urban parks. Practice your identification of ducks, sparrows and over 20 species of wintering birds as we explore the different inhabitants of Yates Mill. Participants will learn how to use eBird to submit data and keep track of the birds in your neighborhood. Participants must pre-register to attend.
